Sailing ILCA in Hong Kong

What are your options for starting ILCA/Laser Dinghy sailing in Hong Kong?

  1. LCSD - The Hong Kong Government LCSD centres are one route to ILCA/Laser Dinghy sailing. Warning: It may take some time. The first step is to attend Hong Kong Sailing Federation (HKSF) learn-to-sail program at one of the LCSD centres. After completing HKSF Levels 1, 2 & 3 (and a minimum 40 hours of logged sailing hours required between Levels 2 & 3), the next step is to take the Laser Helm course, which is a two-day course that focuses on the specifics of sailing a Laser Dinghy. Once sailors have completed the Laser Helm course, they can rent Lasers at the Tai Mei Tuk, Wong Shek, and Stanley LCSD centres. Additionally, sailors have the opportunity to participate in LCSD-organized regattas once or twice a year.
  2. Sailing Clubs - The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, Hebe Have Yacht Club and the Aberdeen Boat Club all have very popular Child, Youth and Adult Sailiing programs. Members have priority booking. You will likely need to do HKSF Levels 1-3 and possibly a laser clinic. Typically only members can rent boats unless its an event like a regatta, where boats may be available for charter, or a sailing clinic. This list isn't exhaustive, there are other programs at STA run by the HKSF. ABC and RHKYC run Sunday racing at Middle Island thoughout the sailing season (September-May).
  3.  Buying your own. Sky International (one of our HKLCA Nationals' sponsors) can help you with that. You'll need a place to keep it, unless you live on the water, so see (2).

Finally, a more comprehensive list of Sailing Centres in Hong Kong is compiled by HKSF, but haven't had the chance to investigate the unfamiliar ones: https://sailing.org.hk/where-to-sail/

Youth Sailing Development - when you know how to sail and you want to compete in ILCA/Lasers

  1. HKSF has a regional laser squad that trains out of STA, Little Palm Beach. They have an annual recruitment drive in April, and if they don't fill their quota, its ongoing.
  2. HHYC and RHKYC both have Youth ILCA racing programs, they usually start their training programs at the start of September. At present ABC has ILCA racing clinics but not a racing program.
  3.  Hong Kong Sports Institute - Where Hong Kong's elite athletes train for the Olympic pathway. They choose a national team through HKSF selection events starting September - see our section on HK Team Selection Policies.
